        <abstract>
This presentation is about Solaris 11 in day to day usage.
It will be mostly two folded: desktop usage and server
side usage.
On desktop usage: (You need a workstation after all
from where you do your sysadmin stuff):
&#x2022; Reading your Exchange email using Thunderbird or Evolution (by default shipped with Solaris 11) and an opensource tool called &#x2018;davmail&#x2019;)
&#x2022; Setting up local zones for development purposes without breaking your desktop. (You might want to compile/install stuff that breaks).
&#x2022; Most people enjoy listening to their music during work and this is also possible with the build in gstreamer applications plus a freeware external binary.

On Server side usage:
&#x2022; Virtual network interfaces with their own network stack for full control and useable with applications/tools that require raw access to the ethernet device.
&#x2022; Virtual switches to isolate your developement/test environment from the public network. (local only environment).
&#x2022; Proof of concept how to combine the two above.

The AIX operating system is often used in high security or sensitive
environments. This presentation shows the steps that should be taken to
secure AIX to a level that even if the root user is no longer trusted,
the system can still operate and be managed. This entails using role
based access, mandatory access control, privileged files, and the
disabling of root. Having root demoted to a regular user requires other
users to pick up the responsibilities, and that applications to behave
themselves. This will be illustrated with a practical example in the
presentation.

FreeNAS is an open source file and block-level network attached storage
platform built on FreeBSD that features the ZFS filesystem. Thanks to
its true Unix heritage, FreeNAS offers the reliability and flexibility
of FreeBSD but with a modern web-based management console. FreeNAS
supports the SMB/CIFS, AFP, NFS, FTP, TFTP, RSYNC, SCP and iSCSI protocols

        <subtitle/>
        <track/>
        <type/>

        <abstract>
Innovation, cooperation and the sharing of ideas are fundamental to the success of the open source community. Aggressive use of patents to restrict choice and artificially impair market forces is at odds with the very ideas behind open source. As several notable lawsuits have come to light in 2011 and 2012, patents have become a widely discussed topic within the open source community.

However, just as open source developers team up to create innovative software, so too can collaboration across the open source community benefit and protect the openness of software systems. For instance, defensive patent pools leverage the patents of a few to ensure protection for the group against patent trolls and other aggressors. The core benefit for participants in these pools derives from the fact that a company or member invests a certain amount but receives access to and protection from a vast array of IP. There are many different types of defensive patent pools, determined by industry factors, the IP landscape, the goals of the participants, and other considerations.

Open Invention Network (OIN) has seen its number of corporate licensees grow to over 400 since it was launched in 2005 by IBM, NEC, Novell, Philips, Red Hat and Sony. The organization now counts HTC, Cisco, Facebook, and Google among its members. This considerable rise in members of OIN, from both large and small organizations, demonstrates the enormous importance these companies place on the freedom to invent, innovate and operate.

Software like KVM, Git, OpenJDK and Webkit has recently been included in OIN's updated Linux System definition, the list of software packages that define where the OIN community will cross license and not pursue patent infringement claims against one another. Through the update, the first time this has occurred since 2005, OIN expanded the list by more than 700 new software packages. In addition, OIN enhanced the coverage of innovations in previously identified software packages by upgrading the list to more current versions of those packages. In total, the size of the Linux System definition will very nearly double.

As Linux has become more integrated and prolific in the technology used by people every day, its relevance as a medium for creativity and innovation is vital. The constant barrage of lawsuits threatens to undermine or slow the progress that is being made. In other fields, such as the arts or architecture, companies encourage innovation and build from the invention and breakthroughs of others, even competitors. Those that do not collaborate become isolated and increasingly stale. Open source software can and is enhancing collaboration, where companies and individuals work together to make important advances. OIN and its community members have made the choice to foster collaboration, to support the freedom to innovate, and to ensure that advances in software will continue at a rapid pace.

Keith Bergelt is the Chief Executive Officer of Open Invention Network (OIN), the collaborative enterprise that enables innovation in open source and an increasingly vibrant ecosystem around Linux. In this capacity he is directly responsible for enabling, influencing and defending the integrity of the Linux ecosystem. Central to the achievement of his goals is the acquisition and transfer of patent rights designed to permit members of the Linux ecosystem (like KVM, Git, OpenJDK and WebKit) to operate free of the threat of assertion and litigation from those whose business models are antithetical to innovation and global economic growth in information technology and computing.

Prior to joining the Open Invention Network, Mr. Bergelt served as president and CEO of two hedge funds &#x2013; Paradox Capital and IPI &#x2013; formed to unlock the considerable asset value of patents, trademarks and copyrights in middle market companies. During Mr. Bergelt's stewardship of these activities, he raised over $300 million while financing IP-centric portfolio companies of leading private equity firms. It may not seem significant where developers of the Linux kernel and
software close to it work on, but it is a breeding place for new
technologies and drivers. The projects get time to evolve, before
they show-up in major Linux distributions.

This presentation will give an overview of developments in kernel-land;
what to expect from them in the near future. It will include an overview
of what's new in the recently released Linux kernels 3.2 and 3.3, released
in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Fedora 17. The talk will also discuss what's cooking
for 3.4 and under discussion for later inclusion. In that scope, some aspects
of the Linux development process will be explained and some challenges outlined
that the kernel and its developers currently face. Attendees with technical
ability will gain a better understanding on where the kernel stands and
what to expect in the near future.

This presentation will cover two subjects: an introduction to "Spice", and
the redirection of USB devices towards a virtual machine.

The Spice project aims to provide a complete Open Source solution for
interaction with virtualized desktop services. What is Spice? How does
it work? Comparison to other techniques to access a remote virtual
machine, like VNC. Future features.

USB redirection is using USB devices attached to a real machine inside
a virtual machine (guest). The focus of the second part of the presentation
will be the special case where the USB device being redirected is not attached
to the physical machine hosting the virtual machine, but to some other machine.
The talk will present and discuss the ongoing work to create an FOSS solution
for this, getting this merged into upstream qemu, as well as integrating
this into Spice and the Spice-client.

The audience is expected to be familiar with generic virtualization concepts,
but no deep technical knowledge is required.

typische Linux-server of -desktop.

applicaties.

        <abstract>
Btrfs has been described as the next generation Linux file system, amongst
others by the principal developer of the currently de-facto standard file
systems on Linux ext3 and ext4. In development since 2007, in the official
Linux kernel since 2009 and embraced by several distributions since 2011.
With features like disk error detection and correction, copy-on-write, light
weight snapshotting, on-line file system shrinking and transparant file
compression, the high expectations of Btrfs are justified.

This talk intends to provide an introduction of Btrfs from a system
administration point of view focusing on its concepts, current capabilities
and limitations and the practical value of its features. A demonstration and
a few benchmarks will also be provided.
